Phone Won't Turn On? Try These Fixes First

You press the power button. Nothing. You press it again, harder, like that'll help. Still nothing. Before you assume the worst, run through these steps. A phone that won't turn on is often a phone with a simple, fixable problem.

1. Charge it (properly)

This sounds obvious, but a fully drained battery can take 10 to 15 minutes on the charger before the screen shows any sign of life. Plug it into a wall charger (not a laptop USB port), and wait. If you see a charging icon or a red battery symbol after a few minutes, you're on the right track. Let it charge for at least 30 minutes before trying to power on.

2. Try a force restart

Sometimes the phone is actually on but the screen is frozen black. A force restart can jolt it back:

• iPhone 8 and newer: press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
• iPhone 7: hold Volume Down + Sleep/Wake together for 10 seconds.
• Most Android phones: hold Power + Volume Down for 10 to 15 seconds.

3. Check the charging port and cable

Lint packed into the charging port is one of the most common reasons a phone "won't charge." Shine a flashlight in there, if you see fuzz, gently pick it out with a toothpick or a plastic dental pick. Never use metal. Also try a different cable and wall adapter; cheap cables fail silently all the time.

4. Look for signs of life

When you plug it in, does it vibrate? Does an LED blink? Do you hear notification sounds even though the screen is black? Any of these mean the phone is working but the display isn't. That's a screen issue, not a dead phone, and it's very fixable.

When to bring it in

If none of this works, don't keep guessing. It could be a dead battery, a failed charging IC, or board-level damage. Especially if the phone got wet or took a hard drop.
