How to Free Up Storage on iPhone and Android

"Storage Almost Full." Four of the most annoying words in the English language. Before you start deleting precious photos, try these steps. Most phones are hoarding gigabytes of junk you don't need.

On iPhone

• Offload unused apps: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → enable "Offload Unused Apps." This removes apps you rarely open but keeps their data, so nothing is lost.
• Review large attachments: In iPhone Storage, tap Messages to see how much space old photos, videos, and GIFs in texts are eating. Delete old threads freely. They're backed up in iCloud if you need them.
• Clear Safari data: Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data. Cached web data can quietly grow to several gigabytes.
• Use iCloud Photos: Turn on "Optimize iPhone Storage" under Settings → Photos. Full-resolution photos live in iCloud; your phone keeps lightweight versions.

On Android

• Use the built-in cleaner: Settings → Storage → Free up space (on Pixel) or Device Care → Storage (on Samsung). These find junk files, duplicate downloads, and rarely used apps automatically.
• Clear app caches: The biggest offenders are usually social media and streaming apps. Settings → Apps → pick the app → Storage → Clear Cache. (Don't tap "Clear Data", that logs you out and deletes settings.)
• Move photos to the cloud: Google Photos can back up everything and then remove local copies with "Free up space."
• Check Downloads: The Downloads folder is a graveyard of PDFs, memes, and installers. Clear it out.

Still full after all that?
