Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, goes on sale tomorrow, October 23, starting at $1,999. Preorders opened on October 16 and sold out in about 30 minutes, so a lot of people have one on the way. This week Apple also published the part that never makes the keynote: what it costs to repair the Duo when something breaks. Some of these numbers are a genuine shock.

Apple's published repair prices

These are Apple's own US out-of-warranty estimates, what you pay at Apple without coverage. The final fee depends on Apple's inspection, and Apple notes that authorized service providers can set their own fees.

  • Cover layer over the folding display: $49
  • Back glass: $199
  • Battery service: $229
  • Rear camera: $229
  • Outer display: $379
  • Outer display and back glass together: $509
  • Folding inner display: $999
  • Other damage: up to $1,499

Read that list carefully, because the Duo effectively has three different "screens" with three very different prices. The $49 item is the replaceable nano-texture cover layer that sits over the folding display. Damage the folding display itself and the bill jumps to $999, half the price of the phone. The catch-all "other damage" category tops out at $1,499. And Apple has not separately itemized an AppleCare+ fee for the rear camera or for the combined outer display and back glass repair, so how Apple classifies that damage decides the fee.

The AppleCare+ math

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the Duo costs $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year. With coverage, Apple's service fees drop hard: $99 for the inner display, $99 for other accidental damage, $29 for the outer display, $29 for back glass, $19 for the cover layer, and battery service is free while the battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity.

Run one bad day through those numbers. One year of coverage at $199.99 plus a $99 inner display fee comes to $298.99, against $999 for the same repair with no coverage. That is why, for this particular phone, the coverage math looks different than it does on a regular iPhone. The honest counterweight: if the only thing you ever break is the $49 cover layer or the $199 back glass, a year of premiums costs more than the repair itself. AppleCare+ on the Duo is insurance against the big folding screen bill, not a savings plan for small fixes.

One gap worth knowing: Apple has not published a hinge-specific repair price. Some reporting suggests hinge damage would land in the "other damage" category, but that is an inference, not an Apple quote. Until Apple inspects the phone and classifies the damage, nobody can honestly quote you a hinge repair price.

How is the Duo holding up?

The early durability picture is better than foldable skeptics expected. The hinge system is encased in titanium, reviewers describe the opening and closing motion as smooth and solid, and the phone carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, which is rare for a folding phone. The inner display has a nano-texture finish that hides the center crease better than the glossy screens on rival foldables, and an Apple executive has publicly said the company is confident the crease will not get much more noticeable with age, inviting customers to hold Apple accountable for exactly that.

Two honest unknowns remain. Apple has not published a fold-cycle rating, the number of openings and closings the hinge is engineered for, and it has published no guidance about sand or grit around the hinge. So treat the fold with the respect a $1,999 first-generation device deserves: keep grit away from the hinge area, and think twice about opening it at the beach or in a dusty workshop.

What a local shop can and cannot do

We will say this plainly: there is no third-party parts channel for the iPhone Duo yet. Nobody outside Apple can source a genuine folding display for it today, so real damage to the folding screen goes to Apple for now, at the prices above. Any shop quoting you a cheap Duo inner screen repair this fall is not being straight with you.

What a local shop can do is prevention, and on this phone prevention is worth real money. A good case and protection for the outer screen guard the parts that take the everyday hits, and they cost a tiny fraction of a $379 outer display repair or a $509 outer display and back glass repair. One caution: do not stick a film protector on the folding inner screen. Apple has published no inner screen protector guidance for the Duo, and that replaceable cover layer is an Apple service item, not a place for aftermarket film.

When yours arrives, bring it by and we'll check it over and sort out case and outer-screen protection with you.
