It happens in a second. Phone slips into the pool, the sink, the toilet (we won't judge). Modern phones have water resistance ratings, but those degrade over time and don't cover everything. What you do in the next few minutes matters enormously. Here's the playbook.

Step 1: Get it out and power it OFF

Don't try to use it "to see if it still works." Every second electricity flows through wet circuits, corrosion spreads. Hold the power button and shut it down immediately. If it was already off, leave it off.

Step 2: Dry the outside

Remove the case, shake out the charging port gently (port facing down), and pat everything dry with a towel or microfiber cloth. Remove the SIM tray and shake out any water trapped there too.

Step 3: Do NOT do these things

• Don't use a hair dryer. Heat can damage seals and push moisture deeper inside.
• Don't put it in rice. Rice is a myth. It doesn't absorb moisture from inside a sealed phone, and starch dust gets into ports. Silica gel packets are better, but still not a fix.
• Don't charge it. This is the big one. Charging a wet phone can short-circuit the charging IC and turn a recoverable phone into a dead one. Wait at least 24 to 48 hours, and even then, be cautious.
• Don't open it yourself unless you know exactly what you're doing, you'll void any remaining water-resistance and warranty.

Step 4: Get it to a repair shop fast

Here's what most people don't know: water damage is a race against corrosion. The minerals in water start eating circuit board traces within hours. A professional can open the phone, clean the board with ultrasonic equipment, and assess the damage before corrosion spreads. The sooner you bring it in, the better the odds, same-day is ideal.

Even if the phone seems fine after drying out, latent corrosion can kill it weeks later. A professional cleaning now prevents a surprise death later.
