Here is a plot twist nobody had on their list a year ago: OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, just agreed to sell its AI models through Google Cloud. The two companies compete head to head in AI, and now one of them is a sales channel for the other.

What was announced

OpenAI said on October 21 that its frontier models and Codex agentic workflows are coming to Google Cloud's Model Garden, the catalog where cloud customers discover and deploy AI models. The first models on the list are GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6 Luna, and they are rolling out now in a private preview for select enterprise customers. General availability is planned for the coming weeks.

The part that matters most is the billing. Purchases go through the Google Cloud Marketplace, which means OpenAI usage lands on a single Google Cloud invoice, draws down a company's existing cloud spending commitments, and counts toward Google's Flexible Savings Plans. A business already running on Google Cloud can now evaluate and buy a rival's frontier models without setting up a separate procurement path.

OpenAI's models are also slated to appear inside Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent, and customers in the preview can connect local Codex command line and desktop workflows to Google's platform for inference.

Why it matters

For businesses, the practical effect is choice. An IT team can compare Google's Gemini and OpenAI's models side by side inside the cloud contract it already has, and Google says prompts and responses stay within the customer's own data perimeter rather than being used to train foundation models. Some safeguards, like zero data retention options and confidential computing, are listed as coming soon rather than available today.

For OpenAI, this is distribution. Its exclusive arrangement with Microsoft expired in April, and it has since expanded to Amazon Web Services and Oracle. Google Cloud is the next stop, and the company was careful to say Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.

The bigger picture

Step back and the pattern is clear: the big cloud providers are turning into neutral shelves for the best AI models, whoever built them. Google now offers models from all three leading closed model providers alongside its own Gemini and hundreds of other models on one platform. Rivalry in the lab, partnership on the invoice.

For the rest of us in Escondido, the takeaway is simpler. AI is becoming a utility you shop for, like electricity: same bill, more choices. And if your phone or laptop is the thing slowing down your workday while all this AI races ahead, that is a problem we can actually fix. Bring it by the shop and we will take a look.
