Yesterday, OpenAI held its DevDay 2026 event in San Francisco, and the headline is a big one. The company introduced Dots: always-on AI agents that keep working on your goals in the background, even when you are not chatting with them. More than 20 announcements came out of the day, but Dots is the one that points to where all of this is heading.
What are Dots?
Until now, ChatGPT mostly waited for you to ask something. Dots flip that around. Each dot gets its own cloud computer and browser, and it can connect with more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI's plugin system. You give it a goal, like tracking a project, researching a purchase, or keeping tabs on a schedule, and it works toward it on its own, around the clock. OpenAI's CEO described them on stage as having the initiative of a high-agency engineer or chief of staff.
Dots are built on OpenAI's top model, GPT-6 Astra, and they learn your preferences the longer they work with you. The idea is that instead of opening a chat and starting from zero every time, you have an agent that already knows how you like things done and quietly gets to work before you ask.
The quieter win: GPT-6.1 Sol
The flashy launch got the headlines, but developers are talking about GPT-6.1 Sol. OpenAI says it delivers near-Astra intelligence at about one fifth of the token price. That matters because the cost of running an AI model decides what kinds of apps can actually survive in the real world. Cheaper powerful models mean more useful tools, more experimentation, and eventually lower prices for the AI features you use every day. If you are a builder, this is the launch that changes what you can afford to leave running.
What does this mean for regular phone users?
Here is the part that affects the rest of us. OpenAI also announced ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace where teammates and their dots work together, and computer use for agents, meaning they can operate software through its interface, not just answer questions. The direction is clear: AI is moving from something you talk to into something that does things on your behalf, on your phone and on your computer.
That shift will make your device work harder. Always-on agents syncing, researching, and running in the background need a healthy phone: good battery life, enough storage, and a screen you can comfortably use all day. If your phone is already slow, overheating, or running out of space, it will feel the strain of the agent era sooner. A tune-up now is smarter than a replacement later.
