How to Clean Your Phone's Charging Port Safely

Your charger only works if you hold it at an angle. Or it connects and disconnects randomly. Before you assume the worst, check the charging port. In our experience, packed-in lint is the single most common cause of charging problems, and it takes two minutes to fix.

Why ports get clogged

Your phone lives in your pocket, and pockets are full of lint. Every time you slide the phone in, a little more gets packed into the charging port. Over months, it compresses into a dense felt pad at the bottom of the port that stops the cable from seating fully. The result: intermittent charging, slow charging, or no charging at all.

How to clean it safely

1. Power off the phone. Always.
2. Shine a light in the port. You'll probably see gray fuzz packed around the connector.
3. Use a toothpick or plastic dental pick. Gently scrape along the walls of the port and scoop the lint out. Work from the sides, not straight down onto the pins.
4. Never use metal. Paperclips, needles, and SIM tools can short the pins or scratch the contacts. Wood or plastic only.
5. Finish with a dry toothbrush or a quick blast of compressed air held upright (not upside down, that sprays propellant).

You'll be amazed how much comes out. Plug the cable back in, it should click in firmly with no wiggle.

When cleaning doesn't fix it

If the port is clean and the cable seats firmly but charging is still flaky, the port itself may be worn or damaged. The internal pins loosen over thousands of plug cycles. Try a different cable first to rule that out. If it's the port, it's a straightforward repair: we replace charging ports regularly at our Escondido shop, and most are done the same day.
