Repair or Replace? How to Decide

Your phone is cracked, slow, or dying by noon. The big question: fix it or replace it? As a repair shop, you might expect us to always say "repair". But honestly, sometimes a new phone is the smarter move. Here's how to think about it.

Repair usually wins when…

• It's a single issue. Cracked screen, worn battery, broken charging port. One problem on an otherwise healthy phone is almost always worth fixing.
• The phone is under 3 years old. It still has years of software updates ahead and plenty of performance left.
• You're happy with it. If the camera, speed, and features still meet your needs, why spend 5x more for a marginal upgrade?
• Your data and setup matter. No migration hassle, no re-logging into 40 apps, no learning a new interface.

Replace starts making sense when…

• Multiple things are failing. Screen cracked AND battery dying AND storage full AND camera foggy? The repair bill starts approaching the value of the phone.
• It's 5+ years old. No more security updates means your banking apps and personal data are at risk. That's a safety issue, not just a convenience one.
• The motherboard is damaged. Board-level repair is possible but expensive; at that point the math often favors replacement.
• You need features it can't offer. If your work now requires 5G or a specific app that needs a newer OS, that's a legitimate reason to upgrade.

The 50% rule of thumb

A practical guideline: if the repair costs more than half of what a good replacement (new or refurbished) would cost, lean toward replacement. If it's well under half, repair is usually the better value. Especially since a repaired phone with a fresh battery often feels brand new.
